Pope Francis urges rich and powerful to help the poor

May 17, 2016

During his annual Lenten message Pope Francis urged the world’s most powerful and affluent to help the poor by engaging in “corporal” works of mercy, which include: feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, clothing the naked, giving drink to the thirsty, sheltering the homeless, visiting prisoners and burying the dead. The Teen Service Corps tried to live the Pope’s message by preparing and serving a warm meal to 20 homeless men in Marin County, CA, this February.  St. Hilary Parish of Tiburon provided a warm place for them to sleep.

TSC partnered with the The Rotating Emergency Shelter Team (REST), a local organization that has responded to the lack of  capacity in Marin’s existing shelter system. Through a partnership with more than 40 local congregations, REST provides shelter for up to 20 women and 40 men on a nightly basis for the winter months. St. Hilary Church, along with other congregations in our area, open their hearts and their doors, providing meals and companionship to REST guests. One goal of REST is to help foster relationships between congregants and those living on the streets. Another important goal is to help people move from the instability of homelessness toward more permanent housing solutions. Read more about the REST program here.
