On Thursday December 12, the Teen Service Corps hosted the weekly “REST” dinner at St. Hilary Parish in Tiburon. REST, which stands for Rotating Emergency Shelter Team, evolved out of necessity due to the lack of capacity in Marin County’s existing shelter system. Through a partnership with more than 40 local congregations, REST provides food and shelter for up to 20 women and 40 men in Marin on a nightly basis during the cold winter months.
The teens prepared and served meals to over 20 homeless men. They sat side by side with the men during dinner, eating and conversing. As one teen explained, “The guy I was talking to was really nice and smart. He had just fallen on hard times.”
One goal of REST is to help foster relationships between congregation members and those living on the streets. Another important goal is to help people move from the instability of homelessness toward more permanent housing solutions.
After dinner, the teens cleaned up the parish hall so that the homeless men could spread out sleeping bags and mats and get a good, warm night’s rest.
