This past Sunday, the Teen Service Corps joined a number of other volunteers from various churches and synagogues around Marin for a day of “gleaning” at the Green Gulch Zen Buddhist Center in Mill Valley. In Biblical tradition, “gleaning” was when farmers would leave the corners of their crops unharvested so that the poor and hungry could take what was left. In the New Testament, Jesus and his disciples practiced a form of gleaning as they walked through grain fields breaking off heads of wheat to eat.
The event was organized by the Marin Interfaith Council. According to Stacee Christen, who chaperoned the teens, “the experience felt inclusive and went beyond tolerance into embracing commonalities and sharing traditions.”
